Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for plant operational maintenance
   • Access, interpret and apply service perform plant operational maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select and prepare appropriate tools, equipment and materials for use and transport to the worksite
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Conduct planned routine maintenance
   • Obtain and interpret maintenance schedule and coordinate resources
   • Complete planned routine maintenance
   • Record any follow-up action required
3. Conduct breakdown maintenance
   • Evaluate the extent of work required to fix the breakdown and put in place site procedures to minimise downtime/loss of production
   • Complete breakdown maintenance
   • Record details of maintenance action completed and/or required
4. Conduct temporary repairs
   • Identify the location of the problem and prioritise the requirement to minimise downtime/loss of production
   • Assess the requirement for temporary repairs and identify and acquire resources
   • Complete the repair
   • Record details of temporary repairs
5. Finalise the maintenance activity
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Process records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the performing plant operational maintenance that meets all of the required outcomes, including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of performing plant operational maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

interpreting maintenance schedule and coordinating resources

completing planned routine maintenance

recording any follow-up action required

evaluating the extent of work required to fix the breakdown

putting in place site procedures to minimise downtime/loss of production

completing breakdown maintenance

completing temporary repairs

recording details of maintenance action completed and/or required

completing housekeeping

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge performing plant operational maintenance through:

site and equipment safety requirements

equipment and plant characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

equipment and plant operational procedures

site equipment and plant maintenance procedures

site environmental requirements and constraints related to operational maintenance activities
